Tobacco producers and cooperatives from the Sandino and La Palma municipalities, in Pinar del Ríoacquired this Friday modern tractors that will favor planting in the territory with the highest leaf production in the country.
The sale of this machinery is part of the financing scheme promoted by the Tabacuba Business Group, that pays producers a portion of their harvests in freely convertible currency (MLC), requires a publication from the Radio Guamá station.

“We imported 300 tractors. This is a first batch of 150. And before the end of the year we plan for the rest to arrive. Pinar del Río decides on the amount of agricultural tobacco that must be planted, therefore, of the 150 tractors, about 90 stayed here,” said the president of the Tabacuba Business Group Marino Murillo Jorge, quoted by the media.
The manager highlighted the willingness of tobacco growers to reinvest their profits in this type of machinery to increase their production, in order to grow their income.
Yadira García Sánchez, president of the Augusto César Sandino Agricultural Production Cooperative (CPA) of La Palma, recognized that with the tractors acquired, “the work in the field will be humanized in a productive structure dedicated, in addition, to various crops and livestock; hence the equipment is very useful.”
Other producers benefiting from the sale explained the possibility of doubling their planting plans and increasing yields, as well as saving the money that they previously had to allocate to pay third parties for the preparation of the land, since now they will carry it out with their own means.
This is not the first time that Tabacuba facilitates producers’ access to modern machinery to boost yields in one of the sectors that earns the most foreign currency into the island’s battered economy.
With these operations, the business group makes the technology available to producers at the same value at which it was acquired, and also offers them payment facilities.
Murillo Jorge emphasized that the only condition to access resources is to produce tobacco, regardless of the organization or property relations.
Stimulus strategy
The sale of modern machinery is part of a more comprehensive strategy that Tabacuba has drawn up to stimulate the best producers in the country, facilitating the use of part of their income to increase yields and improve their living conditions.

Last mid-September, the Tobacco Shop was inaugurated in Pinar del Río, where vegueros can buy various products with the MLC they receive from the state for their productions, and which has notably lost value in the complex commercial network of the island.
The authorities of the business group intend to replicate the experience in other lowland territories, as well as in the center of the country where the leaf is grown.
The initiative has also contemplated the sale of modern cars based on the same scheme, which seeks to enhance the supply of raw materials for a sector that closed the year 2024 with record income through the company Habanos SA.
