MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban government recently presented the SEGRÁ coffee brand to the international market, characterized by “its delicate aroma, strong color of the roasted beans, balanced body and acidic, floral and fruity notes that linger on the palate for a long time after of tasted”.
The presentation was made, before 80 exhibitors, by Rafael Bello Leyva, director of the Coffee Processing Base Business Unit (UEB), during the I International Business and Business Fair for Biorganic Products, Biocuba 2022.
The new brand is processed by the Alto Serra company, “the first export pole in the Upper East authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment (MINCEX),” reported the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
Last October, at the IV Coffee and Cocoa Congress, the Cuban authorities presented five special coffees, evaluated by foreign tasters and received “a score above 85,” as he explained to AFP the scientific director of the Agroforestry Research Institute of Cuba, Ramón Ramos.
Meanwhile, in the same month, the island’s regime raised the price of standard ¡Hola! coffee, the only one that most Cubans have access to, mixed with peas and of poor quality.
In September of this year, the production of 229 tons of coffee Hello! The demand for the regulated basket in Havana was notably affected in the José María Pérez Base Business Unit (UEB), known as the 8 Vías roaster, due to the constant blackouts and the lack of lithographed polypropylene for the product packaging.
For several years, the monthly quota of four ounces per person has been met with difficulty. To complete the 24,000 tons per year for domestic consumption, it is necessary to import some 8,000 tons of low quality, but until 2020 several brands of good Cuban coffee and other foreign ones were sold in stores for foreign currency (CUC). With the Ordering Task, since January 1, 2021, coffee has been disappearing even from stores selling Freely Convertible Currency (MLC).
