Cuban government criticizes US pressures to subtract support from its resolution against the embargo

The Cuban government said Tuesday that Washington “presses” other countries so that they do not vote in favor of their resolution against the embargo/block of the US against the island.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, accused the State Department of continuing “the corrupt agenda” of his Secretary Marco Rubio and making “Lobby with lies” and pressing “to his allies to subtract support from the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly against the blockade (embargo) to Cuba”.

Rodríguez added that USA “intends to deceive the international community and hide the serious damage that causes Cuban families” Washington’s sanctions against the island, which have serious economic, financial and commercial repercussions.

The Cuban headline did not specifically mention the reason for his statements. However, the Reuters agency recently published, based on an internal cable of the State Department to which it had access, that the US government seeks to “press” other countries so that they do not support the Cuban resolution.

Washington’s main argument, according to this information, is that Cuba is supporting Russia in the invasion of Ukraine, “with up to 5000 Cubans fighting alongside Moscow’s forces.”

The Minrex estimates in 7556 million dollars the annual loss by the embargo and indicates its “extraordinary human damage”

The Cuban government presents this resolution every year for the US to lift its sanctions against the island. In 2024 they only voted against the US and Israel, while Moldova refrained.

Although it does not have a binding effect, Havana interprets as a diplomatic victory the majority support of the international community that collects annually with this non -binding resolution.

The Cuba government estimates at 7556 million dollars the cost of sanctions between March 2024 and February 2025.
