Cuban government chooses four former baseball players for its Hall of Fame

MADRID, Spain.- Four former Cuban baseball players were elected to the Island’s Baseball Hall of Fame, located in the Palmar de Junco stadium, in the province of Matanzas.

official media reported that during a press conference held on December 27, coinciding with the 148th anniversary of the first official baseball game in Cuba, the names of Pedro Luis Lazo, one of the best pitchers in the history of Cuban baseball, were announced; Pedro Chávez González, selected most valuable player in the III National Baseball Series, in 1964; Miguel Cuevas Piedra, first slugger of the National Series; and Osmany Urrutia, second for life in offensive average.

Pedro Luis Lazo will access the site of immortals with the total votes (15) of the Electoral Committee, Pedro Chávez and Osmani Urrutia with 14 votes, and Miguel Cuevas by direct and unanimous election of the Veterans Committee.

According to the president of the Electoral Committee, José Manuel Yong, “the election of these four figures recognizes the stellar trajectory of men dedicated to baseball in Cuba and with results that place them among the best in the country throughout more than 60 years of tournaments. nationals”.

The exaltation will take place on February 6, 2023 in the aforementioned hall.

The Palmar de Junco Hall of Fame hosted its first exaltation in 2017, when Gaspar “El Curro” Pérez (El Héroe de Quisqueya), Rigoberto Rosique and Silvio García were elected. A total of 73 baseball players have been immortalized in this room.

Also this Tuesday, a bust was inaugurated in memory of Emilio Sabourín, pioneer of this sport in Cuba, in the Línea y H park in the capital, in Vedado.
