The Prime Minister of the Cuban Government, Manuel Marrerohe called the provinces to “take advantage of the opportunities” offered by the serious crisis which has been going through the country for more than five years, marked by blackouts, food shortages and a contraction of 11 % of GDP.
During a virtual meeting with governors, Marrero said that “it is urgent to exploit the potential of each municipality, develop local productive capacities and consolidate the relationship with the various economic actors for the benefit of the population,” the newspaper reported Granma.
The island lives a crisis that has decimated the purchasing power of citizens and paralyzed key sectors of the economy.
The Government holds the United States sanctions already called “recruited economic war”, although it also recognizes its own inefficiencies, said the agency EFE.
Marrero had already admitted in July, at a meeting of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), the “Dissatisfaction” of the Cuban government for not resolving “the most sensitive issues that affect the people.”
The national economy, which fell 1.1 % in 2024 and that ECLAC plans to follow in red numbers this year, faces daily blackouts of more than ten hours, lack of supplies and specialized human capitallittle public transport, irregularities in running water and a strong devaluation of the Cuban peso against the dollar.
