MIAMI, United States. – Writer Ángel Santiesteban Prats was arrested by State Security on Thursday, according to journalist Camila Acosta, partner of the former Cuban political prisoner and Freemason.
The arrest of Santiesteban Prats takes place after theFreemasons protest in the Grand Lodge of Cubathis Tuesday, July 23. The writer was arrested by agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) and the State Security upon leaving his home around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, Santiesteban Prats intended to attend a meeting with the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Grand Lodge of Cuba, José Ramón Viñas Alonso, where he would discuss the current conflicts between the Masons and the Government.
Acosta, who was also present at the protest, in which around 200 Masons demanded the resignation of Grand Master Mario Urquía Carreño, said in a Facebook post: “This is a direct affront to Freemasonry following the protest in the Grand Lodge. They are trying to give their claims a political connotation.”
The journalist also denounced the attempts of Mario Urquía and the YouTube channel “Cuban Warrior”allegedly handled by State Security, to distort the protest of the Masons, claiming that it has a political background linked to the CIA. “Nobody believes them, but they are looking for justification to crush the rebellion,” he said.
Acosta recalled that his partner, “in addition to being a renowned writer with several international awards and a former political prisoner, is an impeccable Mason, one of the highest ranking in the country.”
The protest on Tuesday at the Grand Lodge brought together more than 200 Masons who demanded that Urquía Carreño resign. “The protagonists were the more than 200 Masons who attended and the thousands who could not go or who supported us with calls and messages,” explained Acosta.
The journalist directly accused the Grand Master appointed by the repressive organs of being involved in the attack on Freemasonry. “Cuban Freemasonry is under attack, with the complicity of Mario Urquía,” she denounced.

Finally, Acosta expressed his concern for the future of Cuba: “If State Security manages to subjugate the Masons, one of the most important vestiges of freedom left on the Island, then I will be convinced that this country has no salvation whatsoever,” he concluded.
