The Cuban Foreign Ministry said today that it is in contact with the Panamanian authorities about decrees of the Isthmian government regarding transit visas for citizens of the Caribbean island.
We maintain systematic communication with Panamanian authorities, in both capitals, in relation to Decree No. 19 of March 8, on the establishment of the transit visa requirement for Cuban citizens, and its modifications in Decree No. 20 of March 16, The director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Resident Abroad (Daccre), Ernesto Soberón, signed on Twitter.
We continue to monitor the nationals who have been forced to reschedule their flights, as a prerequisite to the visa application; and of those who need to return to third countries where they usually reside, and are not covered by the planned exceptions, added the diplomat on that social network.
Soberón indicated that the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to pay attention to the interests of compatriots, and reiterated the commitment to guarantee a regular, orderly and safe flow of travelers.
The government of Panama modified a previous rule the day before and established a new provision that exempts Cuban citizens or crew members in transit through the isthmus on their way back to their country of origin from the need for a visa.
The new Executive Decree, Number 20, modifies articles One and Two of the previous provision in force since March 8 of this year, which established the visa requirement for Cubans traveling in transit through Panama
In this way, according to the text published the day before in the Official Gazette, Cuban citizens traveling to the island are exempted from the requirement to obtain visas for passengers or crew members in transit.
