The Supreme Court of USA decided this Friday that abortion is not a federal right in the country. The fact occurs by annulling the precedent established by the Roe vs. Wade, which in 1973 conferred constitutional status to the freedom of women to terminate a pregnancy.
After that ruling, thousands of people took to the streets in dozens of cities in the United States to protest against the decision. Crowds poured into the streets singing, marching and carrying banners, according to media reports.
Abortion is already illegal in nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin. Organizations specializing in reproductive health consider it likely that more states covered by the decision will be added.
The Guttmacher Institute, a research group on the subject, said 26 states are “certain or likely” to ban or limit abortion in Roe’s absence, while 16 states have laws protecting abortion rights.
