Cuban film critics will vote in the 2024 Golden Globes

MIAMI, United States. – Three Cuban film critics were selected to represent the Island in the next voting for the Golden Globes (2024), the prestigious awards granted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

In accordance with the post on Facebook of the official Cuban Association of the Cinematographic Press, “after analyzing the individual applications, the organizers [de los Globos de Oro] Berta Carricarte, Antonio Enrique González and Rafael Grillo were selected as the three representatives of this organization for the 2024 vote.”

Berta Carricarte is an essayist, graduate and master’s degree in Art History from the University of Havana (UH). Antonio Enríquez González Rojas is a journalist, art critic, editor and narrator, while Rafael Grillo is a writer and journalist, editor-in-chief of the magazine Bearded Caiman.

In accordance with a note published on the official website of the Golden Globes greatly expanded the voting body for its 81st edition, with the addition of 215 international voters, in addition to the current 95 members.

Promising to increase the size and diversity of the voting body, the new breakdown is Latino (25 percent), Asian (14), Black (10), Middle Eastern (9) and White (42). Meanwhile, at least 17 percent identify themselves as LGBTIQ.

“We have surpassed our goal of reaching 300 voters for the 81st Golden Globe Awards thanks to an extensive global recruiting effort,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “We are thrilled by the unprecedented achievement of building a truly global voting body in which 58 percent identify as ethnically diverse.”

According to the Golden Globes note, the voting body now represents a total of 76 countries, including recent entrants such as Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Serbia and Tanzania.

According to the state agency Prensa Latinathe Golden Globes extended an invitation to the Cuban Film Press Association, which brings together academics, journalists and film critics from the Caribbean nation, to include its members in the new voting body for the first time in history.

Criteria for international voters to participate in voting for the Golden Globes include residing outside of the United States and having submitted entertainment contributions to print, radio, television, or the Internet as a journalist or photographer.
