Cuban exile leaders meet with Senator Rick Scott in the Torre de la Libertad

In the historic Torre de la Libertad, figures of exile as Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat presented the senator proposals to reinforce the struggle for democracy in Cuba.

Madrid, Spain.- The historic Torre de la Libertad, at the Miami Downtown, was a stage this Thursday, August 7, an encounter between leaders of the Cuban American community in exile and the Republican senator for Florida, Rick Scott. The meeting, convened by the legislator, aimed to listen to proposals and points of view on the current state of Cuba and explore measures to strengthen the struggle for democracy on the island.

Recognized figures of exile participated in the exchange, such as the coordinator of the Cuban resistance assembly (ARC)Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, the president of the Foundation Inspire AmericaMarcell Felipe; the director of the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba, Tony Costa; The activist Raudel Collazo – also known as Patriot Squadron-; and the journalist Ninoska Pérez Castellón, among others. Attendees discussed how to improve international support for the Cuban cause and how the senator team could more effectively support efforts against the Havana regime.

“It was a working meeting as always with Rick Scott, where he sought effective and practical measures that can be used against Castroism. We proposed several that would be very strong. There is a process of conversation and convergence between the different factors of struggle for the freedom of Cuba that has been enhanced by this work meeting with the Senator Scott, one of the strongest voices about the freedom of Cuba and of great leadership in the current administration. Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat declared about the meeting.

Rick Scott, a historic ally of Cuban exile, has defended in the congress strict sanctions against the island’s government. In January this yearproposed to replace measures such as the prohibition of visas to people linked to repression in Cuba and the closure of financial flows towards officials and close to the regime. He has also reiterated his demand for freedom for all political prisoners.

The meeting took place in a space full of symbolism for the exiled community. The Torre de la Libertad, Acquired in 2005 by Miami Dade College, he is currently in the process of renewing his museum, which will soon open the public to preserve its history. Built in 1925 as the newspaper of the newspaper Miami Newsthe Mediterranean Renaissance style building – inspired in the Giralda de Sevilla – was included in 1979 in the National Registry of Historical Places of the United States.

After the triumph of the Cuban revolution, between 1962 and 1974, the tower became the first assistance center for those who arrived in the United States fleeing the regime, where they were offered refuge and processing of documents. Today it continues to be a meeting point for manifestations of exile in demand for democracy and respect for human rights on the island.
