MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban exile community in Miami celebrated this Tuesday a homage mass to the victims of the fire in the Matanzas Super Tanker Baseunleashed on August 5 and which ended the lives of 16 people.
The ceremony was presided over by the priest José Conrado Rodríguez, who expressed his wish that no more Cubans die in risky missions or in conflicts unleashed in other parts of the world.
“We have to learn to say ‘no, we don’t want more deaths.’ We do not want Cubans to die, we want them to have hope and have the decision to fight for their freedom (…). We want them to have life in their hands because it is the only way to rescue dignity”.
The father, who was accompanied by his counterpart Juan Lázaro Vélez, addressed the situation that the Island is going through and called for unity among Cubans to overcome the national tragedy. Likewise, he highlighted the role of the Cuban exile in the destiny of the Island.
“The exile continues to love and suffer for Cuba,” said the priest.
During the ceremony, each of the victims was also named, whose lives and courage was highlighted by Father José Conrado.
The 16 victims of the fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base were firefighters and recruits who were serving Active Military Service (SMA). Of the total number of deceased, only two could be identified due to the high temperatures to which their remains were exposed.
