The National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba mourned his death, describing him as one of its most outstanding associates.
LIMA, Peru – The Cuban regime reported this Sunday on the death of economist Antonio Romero, a relevant institutional figure and a constant presence in the Castro regime’s media.
Romero was a professor, researcher and analyst. The official National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba (ANEC) mourned his death, describing him as one of its most outstanding associates.
The state media Cubadebate He highlighted that he served for years as president of the Caribbean Chair of the University of Havana. From that position and in compliance with the official discourse, Romero promoted investigations to criticize, but at the same time justify, the economic and political processes of the Island.
The academic belonged to the International Economics Research Center and was former dean of the Faculty of Economics in the Cuban capital.
He was also organizer of the International Meeting of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems, an event that for decades brought together specialists from multiple countries.
Beyond the academic field, Antonio Romero was a regular collaborator of Cubadebatewhere he had the approval of the Castro censors to publish numerous “economic analysis” articles.
On regime television he was a recurring face, participating in the “Round Table” propaganda space on multiple occasions. In addition, he was a member of the team of the program “Cuadrando la Caja” as a panelist, a debate channel approved by the leadership of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC).
After several programs by the Government of the Island to get out of the current crisis, including the fiasco of the Ordering Task, Romero recognized the need for a structural change in the Cuban economy. At the same time, however, during an interview with OnCuba Last 2024 he believed that these changes have a real expression with the Economic and Social Policy Guidelines, approved in 2011 by the PCC.
“I don’t think that Cuba’s economic policy makers are obtuse or anything like that. Obviously there is a very important level of prejudice or, what is the same, that dogmas of a political-ideological nature are preventing progress in terms of the economic transformation that the country requires (…) But I think that we will survive, we are very resilient,” he commented then when evaluating the country’s macroeconomic strategies.
