Cuban doctors still fail to reach underserved areas in Mexico

Cuban doctors still fail to reach underserved areas in Mexico

The La Murga, El Parotal and Las Mesas hospitals, located in the Mexican region of Petatlán, remain in abandonment. None of the Cuban doctors announced by the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador have arrived to deal with the scarce health coverage in some parts of the country.

In the Mountain of Guerrero, one of the most neglected areas, specialists from the island did not arrive until December 28 and, according to what they told 14ymedio Health sources, then “a gastroenterologist assigned to the town of Tlapa, a pediatrician to Malinaltepec and another to Tlacoapa, a surgeon to Xochihuehuetlán” appeared.

This information contradicts the words of the general director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, who assured this Tuesday at a press conference that by the end of 2022 there were already 610 “Cuban specialists” caring for patients in “highly marginalized areas “.

Of them, the official specified, 123 are from internal medicine, 81 from pediatrics, 64 from general surgery, 48 from family medicine, 30 from ophthalmology, 23 from nephrology and 22 from intensive medicine. Of the remaining 219 he did not define his specialty.

Three other Cubans in Guerrero, a specialist in the lymphatic system, a gastroenterologist and a cardiologist, are in Ciudad Renacimiento

However, the source of this newspaper indicated that the four doctors mentioned -whose stay, food and transfers will have the support of the town- began to consult the first week of January. Specifically, the gastroenterologist Elieslaydy Orraca Ramos is already caring for patients in mobile units.

Three other Cubans in Guerrero, a specialist in the lymphatic system, a gastroenterologist and a cardiologist, are in Ciudad Renacimiento, more than 300 kilometers from the Mountain of Guerrero.

The IMSS Donato G. Alarcón hospital in Ciudad Renacimiento has been exposed due to the lack of instruments to attend specialties. Last August, the Guerrero Health Department, Aide Ibarez Castrodenounced the shortcomings in 11 centers in the region.

Robledo announced the upcoming arrival, on January 27, of 124 Cuban doctors: 12 geriatricians, 11 psychiatrists, 10 immunologists, 10 internal medicine, nine cardiology, nine dermatology, seven gastroenterology, and 56 “other specialties.”

These 124 doctors will be sent to 12 states: 22 to Guerrero, 18 to Colima, 17 to Tlaxcala, 16 to Michoacán, 12 to Morelos, 10 to Oaxaca, 9 to Campeche, 6 to Veracruz, 5 to Nayarit, 4 to Baja California Sur , 3 to Zacatecas and 2 to Sonora.

For each of these physicians, the Government of Mexico pays $2,042 a month per specialist and $1,722 for a general practitioner to the Comercializadora de Servicios Médicos Cubanos, SA, a Havana government company created in 2011 that has been internationally accused of human trafficking and forced labor.

With the doctors who will arrive at the end of January, the group would be 734, however, the official media Granma count 616, which generates controversy about the function of the more than one hundred remaining Cubans. Last August, the president of the Prisoners Defenders association, Javier Larrondo, denounced that “there are state security agents“among the doctors hired by Mexico to Cuba.

The hiring of 641 Cuban toilets was announced in May of last year to address the “deficit of specialists”, especially in the most marginal area of the Montaña del Guerrero, one of the most conflictive points in Mexico, not only because it is the poorest , but because of the presence of several cartels that dispute the transfer of drugs, something that makes it a permanent source of insecurity.
