MIAMI, United States. — Dr. Alexander Pupo Casas, who was harassed and persecuted in Cuba for denouncing the bad practices and deficiencies of the Public Health system, spoke this Friday about his experience in the few months he has been in the United States.
In a video shared on his account FacebookPupo said he had found in the northern country the freedom that he did not have on the Caribbean island.
“Freedom is priceless. You can have it all, that as long as you’re a slave it won’t mean anything. I prefer to be free, even if my hands hurt, even if I look tired, even if my body doesn’t have the elegance of a good suit,” said the doctor, who, at the moment, makes a living carrying boxes.
In that sense, Pupo Casas assured that he has a clear conscience with the work he does.
“I’d rather have a healthy conscience veneering in a jungle than a dirty heart in an operating room. We’ll see each other soon, but in the meantime, work gives me everything I’ve ever deserved,” she expressed.
The doctor, a member of the Free Cuban Medical Guild, revealed that in less than a month of work in the US he has already achieved what would have taken him 30 years in Cuba
“Twenty-one days of work in a free country, as a simple worker, has given me the possibility of having what I would not have had in 30 years working as a doctor in a slave country. How sad Cuba!” Pupo Casas assured.
the cuban doctor arrived in the United States through the border with Mexico on July 23, 2022 after a migratory journey of more than two months.
Upon his arrival, the doctor told Radio Televisión Martí that he left the country “practically forced, because he had no plans to live outside of Cuba.”
“Not even when I graduated from my degree did I want to go on a mission. It was not among my plans, I wanted to become a specialist and provide health on the Island,” said Pupo Casas, who left his daughter, his grandmother and his father on the Island.
