MADRID, Spain.- Cuban javelin thrower Guillermo Varona achievement the third gold medal for Cuba in the Paris Paralympic Games during the day on Tuesday. Varona, a native of Camagüey, won the final of the F46 category with a throw of 66.14 meters, which allowed him to set a new American record and reach his personal best. This victory represents his first Paralympic title, after having been crowned champion at the Kobe 2024 World Cup and the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.
The podium was completed by Indians Ajeet Singh, who took silver with a throw of 65.62 metres, and Gunjar Sundar, who took bronze after throwing 64.96 metres. Mexican Gabriel Buenaventura finished in fourth place, with a mark of 61.65 metres.
In the morning hours of the same day the Cuban delegation had obtained its two first gold medals. In the T47 long jump, Robiel Yankiel Sol was crowned champion with a jump of 7.41 metres, beating China’s Wang Hao and Russia’s Nikita Kotukov. Meanwhile, Omara Durand, along with her guide Yuniol Kindelán, won gold in the T12 400 metres, with a time of 53.59 seconds, the best of the season.
With these three gold medals and one silver medal, Cuba climbed to 23rd place in the overall medal table of the Paralympic Games. The Cuban delegation is made up of 21 athletes participating in eight disciplines. Among those who have already said goodbye to Paris are swimmer Yosjaniel Hernández (category SM7), shooter Yenigladys Suárez, taekwondoka Lidia Montes de Oca and archer Leydis Posada.
This Wednesday, weightlifter Pablo Ramírez will compete for the title in the 54 kg division. While Cuba’s representative in table tennis, Yunier Fernández Izquierdo, will compete in the semi-final against Italian Federico Falco.
