Cuban delegation describes the athlete’s desertion as “reprehensible”

The desertion of the javelin thrower Yiselena Ballar Rojas was classified as a “reprehensible attitude” by the Cuban delegation that is preparing to compete in the World Athletics Championships in the US city of Eugene (Oregon) between July 15 and 24.

“Given his reprehensible attitude, which turns its back on the commitment made, we confirm the will to strengthen ourselves in the effort to fight for a result worthy of the nobility of the people that will continue our work in the city of Eugene,” says the note that has been published this Wednesday the state sports portal Hit.

In addition, he reiterates the decision of the rest of the athletes to give themselves “with passion to each one of the days” of the World Cup, “inspired by the many pages of resistance that distinguish Cuban sport.”

Greisy Robles, champion of the 100 meter hurdles at the recent 1st Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe 2022, stands out among the 15 athletes summoned for the event in Eugene.

In the group, now made up of 14, also stand out the sprinter Roxana Gómez and the long jumper Maykel Massó, the Olympic bronze medalist in the discus throw, Yaimé Pérez, the triple jumper Lázaro Martínez, indoor world champion in Belgrade, Serbia, last March, among others.

This desertion occurs practically a month after two players from the Cuban under-23 baseball team tried to escape from their delegation during the Pan American Games in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes. Both were detained by local authorities and returned to the Island.

The episode was reminiscent of last October, when twelve U-23 players took advantage of the Youth World Cup, which was also played in Mexico, to leave the team.

In addition, at the end of June, the Cuban Boxing Federation reported that the Olympic and world champion Andy Cruz was surprised in a frustrated attempt to leave the country.

The 2022 world championship in athletics, which will begin this Friday at Hayward Field, is organized by World Athletics and the American Federation of the discipline, and will bring together more than 1,900 competitors from 192 countries.

Athletics: Cuban cast announced to participate in the Oregon World Cup

In the previous Doha 2019 World Cup, the Cuban delegation was placed 13th in the medal table, tied with Bahrain and Sweden, with a medal of each color and added thirty points.

The desertion of athletes is one of the realities that the Government of Cuba has historically faced. The situation has worsened again due to the severe economic crisis that the country is suffering and that keeps the population under exhausting stress.
