Cuban company Malpaso presents season in New York

The Cuban dance company Malpaso opens a season this Tuesday at the Joyce Theater in New York.

The presentations will have guests such as Grettel Morejón, prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Cuba and several musicians from the island, refers the agency Latin Press (PL).

The Alma string quartet, the brothers Aldo López-Gavilán (pianist) and Ilmar Gavilán (violinist), will accompany the performances of Malpaso at the New York theater, from January 21 to 26.

The public will be able to appreciate pieces such as Portrait of family, by the Cuban choreographer Esteban Aguilar; Vertigo, by the Spanish Susana Pous; and Araby Malpaso’s artistic director, Osnel Delgado, premiered last November during the 28th Havana International Ballet Festival.

Delgado, a former Cuban Contemporary Dance dancer, founded Malpaso in 2013, together with his colleagues Daile Carrazana and Fernando Sáez, with the idea of ​​searching for his own artistic language.

The small-format company is made up of graduates from Cuba’s national dance and ballet schools. He has collaborated with choreographers such as the Americans Ronald K. Brown, Sonya Tayeh, Ephrat Asherie and Trey McIntyre, the Canadian Aszure Barton and the Spanish Susana Pous.

Malpaso is associated with the Joyce Theater. Currently, American journalist Toba Singer is putting the finishing touches on a book about the work of this group and its collaboration with famous choreographers, musicians and other artists around the world, reports P.L..

Before appearing in New York, Malpaso performed at the Emerson Paramount Center in Boston, on January 17 and 18, and at the Byham Theater in Pittsburgh, on the 15th.
