a brief note from the Ministry of Public Health reports that on the afternoon of February 1, the young Alejandro Aguilera Milanés, part of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti, kidnapped in Port-au-Prince on January 23, was released.
The kidnappers were described as “one of the armed gangs that operate in that country”, which is facing an escalation of violence and corruption, after the assassination of the president. Jovenel Moisein mid-2021.
The ministerial note thanks “the Haitian authorities and all the people of good will who mobilized immediately to achieve the release of the collaborator in the shortest possible time and safely.”
What had previously been reportedDespite the kidnapping of Aguilera Milanés, who worked as a driver for the Brigade, the Cuban collaborators “continue to provide their care services to the Haitian population, while complying with the security measures established for the performance of their duties.” .”
No details have been released about the health conditions of Aguilera Milanés after the event, the way in which the kidnapping occurred and how her rescue was resolved.
Nor is it known whether the Cuban collaborator will stay in Haiti or return to Cuba.
It is not the first kidnapping of Cuban collaborators that has occurred in Haiti. Dr. Daymara Helen Pérez was kidnapped for ten days a year ago and in December 2021 two Cuban engineers were released a few weeks later.
Cuban doctors have worked in Haiti since 1998, when a brigade arrived to help the population after Hurricane George.
Subsequently, the medical brigade was deployed to provide assistance in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in 2010, the cholera epidemic that followed months later, and the scourge of Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
