Cuban Alaín Otero completed 6.5 points out of a possible nine to become runner-up in the under-17 category at the World Cup Chess for ages, which this Sunday closed its actions in the City of Panama.

Otero said goodbye to the contest with a victory over the Colombian Sebastián Montoya, thus completing a relevant performance, which included another four victories, three draws and a single defeat, in accordance with the website Hit.

The title was reached by the Peruvian Henry Richard Vázquez with seven units, half more than the Cuban, thanks to six successes, two equalities and one setback. As a curious fact, the champion never faced Otero, due to the competition system.

The result was qualified as “historic” for the island chess by the president of the Cuban Federation, Carlos Rivero.

In the contest, in which players of both sexes gathered from under seven years of age and older and divided by categories, Cuba had other representatives, although no other managed to be included among the medalists.

Abel López occupied 23rd place in the U-13 tournament, with five streaks in nine rounds, and in the same age range his partner Lorena Beatriz Montejo celebrated her sixth place with six points, details Hit.

For her part, Llilber Neira also reached six lines and was in ninth place among boys under 15 years of age, and a similar position was achieved by Ana Paula Vázquez among girls under 11 years of age.

Meanwhile, Marlon Manuel Aguilar was sixth in the men’s category for sub-9 and completed the performance of the Cuban representatives in an appointment in which there was also a leading role for the arbitration of the Island with Bárbara López-Chávez Meriño, Roquelina Fandiño and Maritza Arribas among those designated by the International Chess Federation (Fide), add the information.

Carlos Rivero, also national sports commissioner, participated in the theoretical event of the event, in which he presented Cuban experiences in sports management, work models and contributions to educational chess. The latter is a priority issue for Fide, which is why it provides assistance to countries with less economic development so that they can promote this sphere, the media outlet recalls.
