MIAMI, United States.- The Cuban Chanel Terrero gave Spain the third place in the Eurovision Song Contest, a result that the country had not obtained in the competition since in 1995 the Spanish Anabel Conde was in second position.

The Cuban-Spanish singer and dancer appeared dressed as a bullfighter with her “SloMo”, and obtained the best performance in 27 years for the Iberian country: 459 points in total, of which 228 points were in the televote and 231 awarded by the jury.

In the 66th edition of Eurovision, Ukraine won first place, with a total of 631 points, followed by the United Kingdom with 466 points. 40 countries participated in the competition, but only 25 opted for the glass microphone.

Chanel Terrero won the opportunity to represent Spain in the final of this Song Festival with the song “‘SloMo”, the same one with which she won her pass to this competition in January 2022.

The artist, who was born in Havana in 1991 and emigrated to Barcelona as a child, won the Benidorm Fest grand final on January 29, 2022held at El Palau de los Esports L’Illa de Benidorm.

At that time, during the award ceremony, Chanel said she felt “a little shocked” and thanked everyone who voted for her and her team of dancers.

“I promise to give the show at Eurovision to be first. We’re going to blow it up, I promise you. Thank you thank you thank you. I dedicate it to my family, my friends and my entire team,” he said.

Previous jobs

Chanel Terrero has participated in musicals such as The Bodyguard, Flashdance, The Lion King and Mamma Mia! She has also acted in the movies Robo de cerebro 2 and El rey de La Habana. In 2010 she danced with Colombian singer Shakira at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

She was chosen by the Spanish businessman and producer Nacho Cano to be the protagonist of his musical Malinche, about the relationship between Hernán Cortés and La Malinche, the Amerindian woman who accompanied the Spanish in the conquest of Mexico.

From criticism to admiration

When Chanel Terrero was chosen to represent Spain, she received xenophobic and ideological criticism. However, within hours her third place gave her massive support, even from those who hated her.

In February, a journalist from The country (center left) called the song “made in the Miami music churros lab.” This Sunday he recognized that “his interpretation of her from ‘SloMo’ was unbeatable”.

“Elastic, powerful, sensual, intimidating, challenging, overwhelming (…) It is difficult to remember such an impeccable performance by a Spanish representative at this festival,” he wrote.

For its part, the newspaper “El Mundo” (centre-right) published an article shortly after her triumph in Benidorm entitled “Chanel to Eurovision, what a mistake, what a big mistake.” This Sunday, the same columnist wrote: “Chanel, Long live the mother who bore you”.
