Cuban athletics will have important competitions in the year 2022, with emphasis on the indoor and outdoor World Championships, to be held in the months of March and July, respectively.
According to the World Athletics calendar, the body that governs the destinations of the king sport in the world, the universal indoor track event will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from March 18 to 20.
For that tournament, not so far away in time, Cuban athletes are already preparing, including long jumpers Maikel Massó, bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, Maikel Vidal and Lester Lescay.
Vidal and Lescay are training these days in the Portuguese town of Montegordo, under the watchful eye of coach Daniel Osorio, who awaits Massó’s arrival.
In the case of Juan Miguel Echevarría, runner-up in the Japanese summer event, he will not compete in Serbia because he returned to training a few weeks ago, as he continued to recover from the injury suffered in the Japanese capital.
Hence, it should focus on fully reaching the main fair of the year, the Outdoor World Cup that will host Oregon, United States, from July 15 to 24, where it will try to improve the performance of Doha 2019, a fight in which it reached the bronze metal.
Also, as happens every year, several representatives of the Island will participate in the winter tour and in the Diamond League, events attended by the most valuable and shining athletes worldwide.
As for the competitive action here in national territory, the Cuba Cup and the Barrientos Memorial stand out on the calendar, which must be held in the months of March and May, in that order.
