Cuban athletics record holder stays in Spain

MADRID, Spain.- Cuban sprinter Jenns Fernández left the national athletics delegation with which he traveled to Spain to train for the I Guadeloupe 2022 Caribbean Games.

According to reports, the 21-year-old from Matanzas “disappeared” as soon as he arrived at the Madrid airport on May 23.

The news was confirmed in Facebook for the site SportCuba.

“The payroll released yesterday for the I Guadeloupe 2022 Caribbean Games suffers a loss after learning that the sprinter Jenns Fernández left the National Team concentration upon his arrival in Madrid,” the sports media specified.

He appeared registered for the 100 m and the 4 × 100 m relay and was traveling to Spain to prepare as part of the second group of Cubans who arrived in the Iberian country this Monday, adds the information.

Fernández, known as “Simpson’s twinkle”, is the current national record holder for the 100 meters in the youth category, with a time of 10.14 seconds. He reached this mark at the 2019 Barrientos Athletics Memorial.

The athlete, along with Shainer Reginfo, promised to be the future of this discipline in Cuba.

Recent casualties of Cuban athletics

Lescay, 20 years old and junior Olympic champion in 2018, reached his best mark of the season in this competition with a jump of 8.01 meters, which earned him the bronze medal.

In 2021 the triple jumper Jordan Díaz, gold medalist in the last Youth Games, stayed in Spain after leaving the delegation with which he had traveled to participate in an athletics tournament in the Castellón region.

Jordan Diaz received nationality Spanish last February.
