US immigration authorities have confirmed that a Cuban plane was diverted to the south of Florida and landed in the middle of the Everglades, at a deactivated airport used for airline training.
“Someone from Cuba took a plane and landed it in the Everglades. He is a male and he appears to be in good health,” confirmed Rachel Torres, a spokeswoman for US Customs and Border Protection. The official did not identify the pilot.
Some unofficial versions indicate that the pilot left an airport in the central province of Sancti Spíritus aboard a Russian-made AN-2 plane dedicated to agricultural activities. The flight lasted just over an hour.
