Cuban activist Magdiel Jorge Castro takes refuge in a South American country

MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban activist Magdiel Jorge Castro, who received an order to expulsion from the Bolivian authorities last December, took refuge in another Latin American country.

“To all those who were pending these days to thank. Today I am calm and with the certainty more than ever of being on the correct side of history,” said the activist from Twitter this Sunday.

In the same social network denounced: “My expulsion from Bolivia together with the ban on the entry of several Cuban opponents to Nicaragua reflects what is already configured in the region as the export of repression and harassment to countries allied with Havana… What is happening is extremely serious” .

In his posts he shared images where he can be seen making a migratory route on foot along roads and in buses.

Although Magdiel Jorge Castro did not specify the country where he had taken refuge, comments on his publications indicate that it could be Uruguay.

“What a joy to know that you are safe! And especially in Uruguay, which is one of the most democratic countries in the hemisphere. A big hug, Mag”, said the user @Rose_Castelao.

While Carlos Abel Olivera commented: “Welcome to freedom! Uruguay is a beautiful country”.

When publicly announcing his expulsion from Bolivia, the country where he lived legally, the opponent had explained that the reason was his denunciations of the Castro regime on social networks.

The human rights activist was summoned by the Migration office of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, where he resided. There he was given the expulsion order for three years, which he had to comply with in 15 days.

Faced with this situation, lawyer Erika Guevara Rosas, director for the Americas of Amnesty International, qualified the fact of “arbitrary” and considered it a “disastrous precedent of persecution against the defender for denouncing human rights violations in Cuba.”

For its part, the Human Rights Foundation demanded the Bolivian government to stop this expulsion and respect the freedom of expression of its citizens and legal residents; as well as rejecting the influence of the Cuban dictatorship to violate the rights of those who criticize it.

“HRF condemns the authoritarian government of Luis Alberto Arce for the expulsion of the Cuban dissident, who is a legal resident in Bolivia and has 15 days to leave the country and return to Cuba, where he will likely suffer reprisals from the regime,” the organization said.
