Cuba will pay tribute to dancer and choreographer Ramiro Guerra on his centenary

On June 29, Cuba will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Ramiro Guerra, notable choreographer, dancer and researcher, founder of the National Ensemble of Dance Moderna that later, in 1959, would become Contemporary Dance of Cuba (DCC).

For this reason, the National Council for the Performing Arts will celebrate a tribute day, which will coincide with the 63rd anniversary of the National Theater of Cuba, headquarters of DCC and which at the time hosted the first presentation of the National Modern Dance Ensemble. A commemorative plaque will be inaugurated in that institution on the 29th, as reported the agency Latin Press (PL).

Also for that date, a gala is scheduled to be held at the National Theater, which will review the imprint of War, deceased in 2019 at 96 years of age. The show will remember the work of this relevant creator, owner of a particular dance aesthetic, the result of an extensive fusion of techniques and studies, in the words of the researcher María Lastayo.

Almost a century of war in dance

In addition, to preserve the legacy of the 2000 National Dance Award, some of his texts have been digitized, with the aim of allowing greater access to his work as a pedagogue and teacher of new generations, adds the published information.

Similarly, as part of the tribute, the premiere of the documentary Ramiro… always the dancein which testimonies of people close to Guerra, friends, students and professional colleagues are shown, in a material made by the journalist and dance specialist Yuris Nórido together with the director Adolfo Izquierdo.

The day of activities seeks to promote the study of the work of the father of modern dance in Cuba, according to Marilin Garbey, director of the Documentation Center for the Performing Arts of the National Theater, who also highlighted the human values ​​of Guerra, defender of equality between women and men, without social or racial distinctions.
