Cuba was repatriated to invest and lost everything: “I regret deeply”

Juan Carlos Hernández Mora

After living more than a decade in Germany, Cuban Juan Carlos Hernández Mora returned to the island with the mood of undertaking.

Lima, Peru – after living more than a decade in Germany, Cuban Juan Carlos Hernández Mora returned to the island with the intention of investing and prospering. However, today he is sentenced to 12 years in prison for charges that, he thinks, are false.

The medium Martí News He collected the story of this 52 -year -old Cuban. According to Juan Carlos himself, he decided to repatriate himself in 2008 after a season in Europe dedicating himself to teaching salsa and during which he obtained German citizens.

Once on the island, the entrepreneur bought a colonial house in the center of Trinidad and began renting it for tourists. To insert himself in the community, he also organized chess tournaments in his area and donated to needy families.

His life in Cuba passed quietly until 2019 when he was charged with positions of “pimp, bribery and electric fraud, in a trial held by closed doors.” A year later, Juan Carlos was convicted and cannot leave the country until at least, next 2030.

Other people linked to Hernández Mora were also prosecuted, including his wife. Martí News He contacted some, and none of the women declared to have been coerced to maintain relations with tourists.

After being convicted, the Castro regime confiscated the house that Juan Carlos had bought when he arrived in Cuba and transferred his family in a deteriorated apartment on the outskirts of Trinidad.

“It is typical in Cuba the use of criminal sanctions to appropriate value real estate, especially well -located houses that were renovated for tourism,” said Laritza Diversent, Cuban lawyer and director of the Legal Information Center Cubalex.

This employer has been highlighting since the 90s on the island. According to Diversent, the regime accuses owners who rent foreigners of serious crimes such as pimperism or illicit enrichment, with the aim of confiscating their properties and reallocating them to state officials.

“I just want to finish my condemnation and return to Germany. I deeply regret having returned to Cuba,” said Juan Carlos after sharing his experience.

From 2024 the Cuban-German entrepreneur left prison on probation, but there are still some years so that he can return to Europe. Meanwhile, the German government confirmed that it is in contact with Hernández Mora and that it gives consular support.

The testimony of Juan Carlos Hernández Mora joins that of other repatriated entrepreneurs who, after returning to Cuba in recent times, have been stripped of their assets, wrapped in arbitrary detentions and judgments orchestrated by Castroism. The cases stand out Frank Cuspinera Medina, Cuban American founder of the Diplomarket supermarket, and Armando Uninsain, a Spaniard who invested on the island and lost about $ 400,000.

“The regime can promise openness, but never renounces absolute control,” Diversent said.
