Throughout 2022 the incidence of COVID-19 had fallen to almost zero in Cuba. However, since the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, MINSAP has alerted Cubans to an increase in infections.
Recently, the Minister of Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, reported that from November to December the average number of cases with coronavirus per day increased from 3.7 to 19.1.
According to the health authorities, the Island is experiencing an outbreak of the omicron XBB1 variant, which would be entering the country through tourism.
Dr. Manuel Rivero Abella, provincial director of Health, in the last week of December, when reporting the presence of this new variant, indicated that it had similar characteristics to the previous ones and presented the same behavior: it is transmitted from person to person. For this reason, he recommended the use of the mask, although it is not mandatory.
On that occasion, the headline highlighted that another 16 respiratory viruses were also circulating in the country and warned that some of them cause significant clinical manifestations, such as fever, arthralgia, headache, among others.
According to recent statements by Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, chief epidemiologist of the World Health Organization (WHO), the new omicron variant is circulating in 29 countries.
Since March 2020, 1,112,177 patients diagnosed with coronavirus and 8,530 deaths have been registered in Cuba.
