MIAMI, United States. – The feminist platform YoSíTeCreo in Cuba, the magazine Tense Wings and the Cuban Women’s Network demanded this Monday a stop to the violence against women, girls, boys and adolescents during the recent protests that have occurred on the Island, mainly in Havana.
“Women are protagonists in the four days of peaceful protests, which are mostly reported in Havana, given the overwhelming burden that falls on them in this political, economic and migration crisis. Girls, boys and adolescents have also been present, especially in the most neighborhood demonstrations of cacelorazos and street closures, ”said the different feminist platforms.
They also called for an end to “the violence exercised in different ways against demonstrators, (…) such as the interrogations and arrests of children and adolescents, a problem that has been repeated since the social outbreak of 11J. These arrests of minors are also used as vicarious violence against their parents and legal guardians,” they pointed out.
“As part of our mission, we focus on the situation of mothers, political activists and young women, against whom they have been merciless for participating in the demonstrations. We highlight the injuries and forced disappearances that have been identified, in addition to the less visible situation of the protests in other provinces of the country,” they added.
I do believe you, Tense Wings and the Cuban Women’s Network referred to the figures of the Justice 11J group, which records at least 20 people detained from September 30 to October 2, including Rosmery Almeida (28 years old), Dayamí and Yaima Hernández Villavicencio , and the teenager Cristian Hernández Villavicencio.
“Today little is known [sobre las detenciones]when internet outages have become common as a method to prevent more people from joining the protests and facilitate repression”, they lamented.
“These internet outages are a danger, because many times even communication by mobile phone is difficult, which leaves people who need to ask for help for medical emergencies and also, what concerns us, for gender-based violence, among others, more vulnerable. other emergency situations”, they also pointed out.
Likewise, they condemned “the use of soldiers and police dressed as civilians in the repression, also of recruits from the Compulsory Military Service, among them minors who do not have the capacity to consent. We reiterate the secondary victimization of the use of police and military women to repress other women.”
“We criticize classism and manipulation by government and parastatal spokespersons, which have been published even in official media, which have all kinds of prejudices and discrimination against people who have demonstrated because of their humble origins and popular expression.”
“We reject the request for more resistance to the precariousness of life made by leaders to Cuban families. Cuban families can no longer, and they need solutions and be part of them. Women are in the front line of protests because they can’t take it anymore, because they have to support themselves and their children and other dependents,” they acknowledged.
Finally, the three groups reiterated their call for an end to the violence and recognition of the citizen’s right to protest, and suggested that families with detained persons ask for help and make the cases visible.
