Members of the Fire Department Ministry of the Interior (Minint) and forces from other organizations managed to control this Sunday night the expansion of a fire occurred in areas of the Mario Muñoz Monroy sugar mill, in the western province of Matanzas, according to official media on the island.
The incident began in the afternoon, in exterior areas of the sugar mill located in the Los Arabos municipality, and extended to the premises for storing bagasse, according to a note published on the web portal of the local channel Yumuri TV.
Due to environmental conditions, determined by intense temperatures, this fire occurred involving 300 tons of bagasse used to generate steam in the sugar mill, reported the coordinator of the AzCuba group in killingsOrlando Vandrell Neck, according to the source.
The director stressed that no fatalities or injuries were reported. In addition, he pointed out that the flames had not yet been completely extinguished, but they had been controlled and there was no danger that they would reach the industry. “The damage will be assessed once the flames cease,” he said, quoted by the source.
The first secretary of the Party in Los Arabos, Zomaika Triana Berrier, pointed out that they had enough support to suffocate the persistent flames. This official told the media that the sugar mill stopped grinding and the electricity was cut off. She also pointed out that no people were evacuated because the industry is far from the communities and the smoke does not affect them.
