Cuba: the situation of the electrical system remains “tense”

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reiterated this Thursday that the situation of the national electricity system is “tense” and admitted that “difficult days remain” due to the arrival of the hottest months of the year, those with the highest consumption.

“The energy situation in Cuba is tense, motivated by the lack of generation capacity and fuel oil. They are also the result of the blockade, there are those who do not believe it, but the effect is real”, assured the president during a visit to the central province of Ciego de Ávila, quoted by the agency Eph.

This is the second time in less than a month that Díaz-Canel describes the state of electricity generation in the country as “tense”. Since May there have been supply cuts of several consecutive hours in different regions of the country. Havana has also been affected, but not with the same intensity.

The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) reported today that on Thursday there were damages from 08:02 a.m. to 9:10 p.m. “The maximum affected in this schedule was 353 MW at 6:40 p.m., higher than planned due to the non-entry on time of unit 8 of the CTE Máximo Gómez”.

Similarly, the UNE pointed out that six units from four different plants are out of service due to breakdowns, while another three are undergoing maintenance.

“Units six and seven of the CTE Máximo Gómez, units one and three of the CTE Ernesto Guevara, unit four of the CTE Diez de Octubre and unit three of the CTE Antonio Maceo are out of service due to breakdowns. The Otto Parellada CTE unit, Lidio Ramón Pérez CTE unit two and Antonio Maceo CTE unit six are under maintenance.”

In the last 11 months, the UNE has notified more than 300 damages, due to breakdowns or repair tasks, in many of the 13 thermoelectric plants (eight on land and five floating).

Since the end of May, the Government has reported daily on the availability of megawatts in the national supply system. The Executive works at forced marches so that everything is in order for July and August, when consumption rises due to the use of air conditioners in homes.

The blackouts were one of the factors behind the anti-government protests in July 2021, along with shortages, inflation and growing complaints as a result of a crisis exacerbated by the COVID pandemic.
