Cuba: the face-to-face debates of the Temas magazine return

The debate space “Last Thursday”, of the prestigious Cuban magazine Topicsreturns this May 26 in person, after the break imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 that forced its transfer to the virtual modality.

On its return, between 4:00 and 6:00 in the afternoon, the exchange will open the Sala Héctor García Mesa, located on the ground floor of the building of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC)and will have as its theme “Associate in society”.

During it, “the invited panelists will share with the public their visions, inquiries and arguments related to the different types of associations, their functions and challenges in the current Cuban context”, needs the post itselfdirected by professor and researcher Rafael Hernández, columnist of OnCubaand habitual moderator of the debate.

On this occasion, Joel Suárez, from the Martin Luther King Memorial Center; Miriam García Mariño, from the Directorate of Associations of the Ministry of Justice; Teresa Fernández, from the Network of Lesbian and Bisexual Women; Yociel Marrero Báez, from the Foundation Antonio Núñez Jiménez of Nature and Man; and the peasant Jesús Espinosa Perestelo, from the Juan Verdecia Cooperative, from Camajuaní, Villa Clara.

As a guide to the debate, the organizers published a group of questions with the intention that they serve as point to the participants. Among them, what is the role of associations in society? What problems affect their existence and functioning? What factors limit their development as spaces for participation? What actions can contribute to raising their role in society? And how to develop a civic culture of associations?

Although “Último Jueves” returns in person, it will maintain its presence on digital platforms. Some of the invited panelists “will be intervening through the group created on Telegram,” the magazine specifies. Topicswhich invites those interested to follow the debate in this way if they cannot attend in person and also as an alternative to the limited space in the room.
