One of the most abused concepts by the Cuban regime is that of “food sovereignty.” As if it were a spell and its mere pronunciation was enough to make your own production a reality. to the detriment of importsthe official press repeats it and again.
Always, yes, in the subjunctive mode, in the future that never comes: “Cuba progress in implementation of the National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education”, “Despite all adversity, Cuba works for its food sovereignty”, “Food and nutritional sovereignty: one key of Cuba’s economic and social strategy”. On the island there are even a lawdecreed last May, to guarantee it.
The results of such voluntarism are clearly seen these days in Havana in the products of the so-called module, that are sold in state stores: rice from Guyana, pasta from Turkey, grains from Portugal, canned sardines from Venezuela and –perhaps the most disgraceful, in the case of the once emblematic product of Cuba– sugar from Brazil.
Sugar, precisely, and salt are lacking these days on the Island, which spreads discontent. Few among the population will be able to believe that all these plans to benefit local producers, urban orchards or the local market are more than fairy tales. To produce you need much more than two words.
