Cuba talks about "joint projects" of health with Ukraine, besieged by Russian troops

In the middle of the crisis in eastern Europe, the most worrying since the end of the Cold War, between Russia and NATO countries, Cuba has strengthened its ties with Ukraine in health matters. The Cuban ambassador to that country, Natacha Díaz, and the Ukrainian Minister of Health, Víctor Lyashko, held a meeting this Friday in Kiev to agree on the exchange of experiences in the confrontation protocols against covid-19.

As reported Latin PressWithout alluding to the international dispute that occupies the front pages of the world, Lyashko extended an invitation to his Cuban namesake, José Ángel Portal, to attend the International Congress of Higher Education University 2022, and Díaz took the opportunity to boast of the “efforts” of his Government to “stop the spread of the infection and, especially, on the process of massive vaccination of the child population with national immunizers”.

The Ukrainian minister informed the Cuban delegation of Kiev’s decision to set up “a platform for the development of biotechnological innovation,” in which, the official agency assures, “Cuba and Ukraine could implement joint projects.”

Regarding this, the ambassador mentioned the possibilities of collaboration in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers with the Cuban drug Heberprot-P, as well as in other fields, such as oncology, epidemiology or cardiology.

The Ukrainian minister reported on the launch of “a platform for the development of biotechnological innovation” where the two countries could collaborate

In addition, they reaffirmed the intention to continue the treatments on the Island of Ukrainians affected by radiation of the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located in the then Soviet city of Pripyat, in 1986.

In 1990, the Cuban government launched a care program for patients from Chernobyl, in which, according to official figures, it has provided free care to more than 26,000 minors, adolescents and adults. till the date. Most of them have been from the Ukraine, although Russians and Belarusians have also received treatment.

Far from the island, and oblivious to the diplomatic ties between Cubans and Ukrainians, the foreign ministers of the United States and Russia, Antony Blinken and Sergey Lavrov, met this Friday to reduce the tension around the Ukraine issue.

Not clear left the meetingmore than Moscow’s willingness to keep a diplomatic channel open with the West, which fears that Russia will invade Ukraine at any moment.

The Kremlin has repeated over and over again that such an invasion is unthinkable, but the significant presence of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border, with some 100,000 troops, increases the nervousness of the United States and NATO.
