The notable Cuban sports commentator and narrator René Navarro Arbelo was distinguished this Monday with the National award of Television 2022, according to official media reports on the Island.
The jury, made up of prominent figures from the media such as José Ramón Artigas Vázquez, Miguel Lino Patterson Meriño, Julio Pulido Castillo, Roberto Cornelio Ferguson, Julián Armando Pérez Delgado and Caridad Rojas Zayas, awarded the award to the 76-year-old commentator, who since 1967 has been present on both Cuban television and radio, according to a note published by the official newspaper Granma.

During his more than five decades dedicated to commentary and sports narration, Navarro Arbelo has participated in eight editions of the Olympic Games, 11 Pan American Games and nine regional multi-sport events. In addition, he has left his mark on numerous world championships, world cups, Grand Prix and other international volleyball events, athletics and basketball, highlights the publication.
His file also includes coverage of 26 editions of the Cycling Tour of Cuba, as well as his work as host of different sports venues, such as the programs To play, Recreational Marathon and La Sports Press Comment.
He has also been a commentator and broadcaster on the National Television News and the National Sports Newsas well as he has shared the television and radio transmission of various sports specialties with other great figures of narration in Cuba such as Eddy Martin, Héctor Rodríguez, Rolando Crespo and Antolín León.
Granma His great popular recognition stands out for having created iconic phrases within the sports narration, among them the baptism as the Spectacular Brunettes of the Caribbean that accompanied a generation of Cuban players who rose to the elite of the women’s volleyball and won three Olympic crowns.
In turn, Navarro Arbelo has been deserving of the highest award granted by the American section of the International Sports Press Association for his life’s work, and the same national recognition granted by the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) and the National Institute of Sports and Recreation (Inder) in 2016.
