Cuba sends doctors to Antigua and Barbuda, where local staff protest the appalling conditions

(EFE).- Antigua and Barbuda received more than a dozen Cuban doctors this Saturday to avoid the closure and interruption of the country’s health services.

“We are receiving support from the Cuban government with nurses to fill the gap and we met with the representative, the diplomat of Cuba, last week,” said the Minister of Health of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Molwyn Joseph.

Speaking to local radio after the interruption of health services at the country’s main hospital this week, Joseph said help was on the way.

Among the claims are the shortage of personnel, the payment of overtime and the lack of basic equipment in health centers

The Minister of Health specified that he has requested six additional doctors and five nurses in specialized areas.

Healthcare workers in Antigua and Barbuda are protesting the appalling working conditions and have entered into discussions with the Ministry of Health.

Among the complaints are the need for better working conditions, the shortage of personnel, the payment of overtime and the lack of basic equipment in health centers.

The next round of negotiations between the workers and the Ministry of Health is scheduled for Tuesday.
