The Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, shared his condolences this Saturday for the victims of the floods in Kentucky, United States, which have left at least 25 dead.
“I share our heartfelt condolences for the ravages of the torrential rains in the state of Kentucky, USA, which have caused numerous deaths, including children, and considerable material destruction“, wrote the chancellor on Twitter.
The National Weather Service indicated the day before that the section of the Kentucky River in the city of Jackson reached the highest level ever recorded with 13 meters, surpassing a record set in 1939.
The governor of that state declared a state of emergency on Thursday of this week; flood warnings remain in effect for most of the region. President Biden declared the area a “major disaster” to confirm federal aid from the government.
Some 50 air rescues and hundreds from boats have been carried out, Governor Andy Beshear declared days ago. But there is so much water and the currents are so strong “that we cannot reach everyone,” said the government official, who added that those affected will take more than a year to recover.
Some areas of the state recorded about 20 centimeters of rain in 24 hours, in several areas the waters of the rivers suddenly rose several meters and left their banks, which means that thousands of people do not have electricity or running water, for which which makeshift shelters have been opened in gyms, churches and parks.
