Cuba says goodbye with two titles in the regional athletics championship

OnCubaNews

Cuba won this Sunday the men’s title in the pole vault to say goodbye with a harvest of two gold, one silver and three bronze medals at the IV Senior Championship of Athletics of North, Central America and the Caribbean (Nacac), held in Bahamas.

The crown on the final day was provided by the pole vaulter Eduardo Napoles in a test with discreet quality, but in which the Antillean managed to prevail with 5.25 meters. This was an unattainable height for American favorite Luke Winder, who was just over 5.05, according to a note of the website Hit.

The Cuban delegation also added in the closing the bronze medal of the triple jumper Davisleidys Velazco, who with 14.08 meters completed the podium of an event dominated by Thea Lafond (14.49), from Dominica, and the American Keturah Orji (14, 32), add the information.

Meanwhile, the young Mario Díaz celebrated the other bronze medal with a shot of 62.13 meters in the discus. In this test, Jamaica took the first two places, after Traves Smikle threw 62.89 and Fedrick Dacres reached 62.79.

Cuba was present in other finals of the day, but without access to prizes. Located in fifth place, they closed the ballista Layselis Jiménez (16.10 meters) and the 4 × 100 meter relay for women, run by Greisy Robles, Enis Magda Pérez, Laura Moreira and Yunisleidys de la Caridad García in 44.46 seconds.

In addition, Lázaro Taylor Fernández finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.09 seconds, slightly better than the 50.37 set in the preliminary stage, according to a review Hit.

The outlet recalls that between last Friday and Saturday the Cuban representation celebrated with the gold of Luis Enrique Zayas in the high jump, the bronze of the 4 × 400 meter mixed relay and the silver of Denia Knight on the album’s release, albeit without significant records.

The recently concluded edition of the Nacac Championship practically marks the end of the competitive season for most of the island’s athletes, since only the long jumper Maykel Massó and the men and women of the triple jump have some incursions pending in the diamond leagueassures the specialized medium.

Cuban athletics is going through a difficult time, marked by poor competitive results and the departure from the national team —and from the country— of several of its main figures in the last two years. Among these are the promising triple jumpers Yordan and Andy Díaz, the long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría, the sprinter Reynier Mena and the discus thrower Yaimé Pérez.
