The assassination attempt on the vice president of Argentina, Cristina Fernández, deserves the repudiation and condemnation of the entire continent. My solidarity with her, the Government and the Argentine people. The path will always be the debate of ideas and dialogue, never weapons or violence.

The incident is part of a climate of strong political tension in Argentina, after a prosecutor on August 22 requested a 12-year prison sentence for Cristina Fernández. The petition was produced in the oral trial that the vice president faces for alleged irregularities in the award of public works during her government (2007-2015).
Political leaders in the region have shown their shock at this assassination attempt and, in addition to expressing their solidarity with Fernández de Kirchner, have repudiated the violence. Pope Francis also referred to the event this Friday in a personal telegram.
