Cuba has registered 502 deaths in traffic accidents between January and August 2025, which is equivalent to 80% of the total number of deaths from this cause in the entire previous year and therefore points to an increase in mortality on the island’s roads.
According to a report from the National Road Safety Commission released this Tuesday by official media, in the first eight months of this year, 41 more accidents were reported than in the same period of 2024, with a balance of 4,516 injuries.
In comparison, in 2024 as a whole, 7,507 traffic accidents were recorded, 12% less than in 2023, with a total of 638 deaths, according to January data from the National Road Safety Commission.

The authorities indicated that seven out of every ten traffic accidents generate victims, mainly due to vehicle collisions, which continue to be the “most dangerous” accident, with 36% of the total deaths. The report also indicates that each accident caused by excessive speed results in at least one victim.
The Head of the National Traffic Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), Roberto Rodríguez, highlighted that motorcycles and motorcycles are involved in 52% of traffic accidents, accidents that in total account for 32% of the deaths and 42% of the injuries.
Among the main causes of accidents in Cuba are non-compliance with regulations, the poor condition of public roads and the age of the vehicle fleet, with many vehicles between 40 and 70 years old.
