Cuba reiterates in the UN support to Palestine and denunciation "hardening" of US sanctions

The Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, reiterated on Saturday at the United Nations his support for the Palestinian people and denounced the “hardening” of the economic sanctions of the United States.

The Foreign Minister began his speech in the 80 session of the General Assembly expressing “the strongest solidarity of Cuba with the Palestinian people and with their just cause in favor of freedom, independence and the end of the Zionist occupation.”

“If the Security Council is impotent due to the veto that exercises or threatens to exercise the United States, and is not able to take effective measures to cease so much barbarism, this general assembly has the duty and the ability to boost concrete measures without delay,” he said.

He added that “at least, it must unequivocally declare the right of Palestine to be a member of the UN, with the borders prior to 1967, its capital in Eastern Jerusalem and the right to return the refugees.”

Cuba, a historic ally of Palestine, accuses the government of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamín Netanyahu, of genocide since the beginning of Israel’s attacks in Gaza, in October 2023.

The Cuban Foreign Relations also denounced in the UN that the economic embargo, which Cuba considers a blockade, “persists and hardens extremely.”

“This is a true comprehensive and prolonged economic war directed to deprive Cubans of their livelihoods,” said the Cuban Foreign Minister to maintain that “economic aggression has climbed to unprecedented levels in the last eight years.”

Rodríguez acknowledged that the country “faces today a serious scenario of prolonged cuts daily of the electricity service, difficulties in paying for food, insufficient quality of medicines, depression of public transport, limitation in communal services and pronounced inflation that depresses real income.”

He affirmed that this scenario of crisis that the island crosses, aggravated in recent years, responds largely “to the economic aggressions of the United States.”

“It is an unconventional war strategy that combines exciting manipulation to create a climate of hopelessness,” said the head of Cuban diplomacy.

Last January, the United States government returned to Cuba to the list of sponsoring countries of terrorism – with important financial consequences – and included a remittance company controlled by the military in its blacklist.

In addition, he has restricted the visas to several high positions of the Cuban government-including its president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and several ministers-already officials-of Havana or third countries-involved with the Cuban medical missions.
