Havana/Cuba registered a total of 7,507 traffic accidents in 2024, 12% less than those reported in 2023 (8,556), according to official statistics released this Tuesday.
The authorities reported that deaths also decreased by 13% (634) and injured people were 6,613, 4% less compared to the accidents that occurred the previous year.
Among the main causes of accidents on Cuban roads, they cited lack of attention to vehicle control – in 30% of cases – and not granting the right of way (29.9%).
The National Road Safety Commission stated in its annual report that pedestrian collisions remain the third cause of death and the most dangerous type of accident.
It also describes excessive speed as an “extremely dangerous” factor, with every seven accidents leaving one person dead and at least one injured for each of these events.

In particular, it identified 665 drivers who were under the influence of alcoholic beverages at the time of their occurrence as responsible for the accidents, a situation that determined the suspension of 1,204 licenses for up to one year.
The authorities also warn that the participation of motorcycles and mopeds in traffic events grew by 3% compared to 2023, and they see the road indiscipline as “worrying” along with the increase in these vehicles in circulation.
However, other influencing factors are the poor condition of the streets and highways due to the general lack of maintenance, as well as a large part of the vehicle fleet that is between 40 and 70 years old.
Since the beginning of 2025, four mass traffic accidents have been recorded in the country. On January 2, one person was killed and 63 others were injured when the driver of a truck carrying passengers lost control of the vehicle.
The most recent occurred this Monday after hitting two buses in Morón and whose toll – between 6 and 11 deaths – remains a mystery after the official press lower the figure without giving explanations. In total, due to these incidents, the authorities have recorded 12 deaths and 180 injuries.
