In just eight months, 502 deaths were recorded, a figure that already represents 80 % of last total.
Madrid, Spain.- Between January and August 2025, 502 people died in traffic accidents in Cuba, according to data released by the National Road Safety Commission and Replicated by official means. The figure is equivalent to 80 % of the total deaths throughout 2024, which shows a rebound in road mortality on the island.
During that period 41 accidents were recorded more than in the first eight months of the previous year, with a balance of 4,516 injured. In 2024, the country counted 7,507 road accidents, 12 % less than in 2023, a trend that now seems to be reversed.
According to Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the National Transit Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, the main causes remain the lack of attention of the drivers, the disrespect for the road standards, the poor state of the roads and the age of the automotive park, where vehicles with between 40 and 70 years of use abound.
Motorcycles and cyclomotor continue to be protagonists in road accidents: they are involved in 52 % of accidents, cause 32 % of deaths and 42 % of the injured. On average, the “indisciplines” of their drivers cause 11 daily accidents, with at least seven injured and one deceased every six days.
The clashes between vehicles constitute the most lethal type of incident, responsible for 36 % of fatalities. Provinces such as Villa Clara, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Artemisa lead the statistics, with increases greater than one third compared to the previous year.
In recent months, several accidents have been reported in different parts of the country. One of the most recent occurred in Granma, when the driver of a leased bus, belonging to the National Center for Scientific Research of Biocufarma, which covered the Havana Route- Santiago de Cuba, lost control and ended up impacting a fixed obstacle. Three deceased were reported, including the driver, and almost 30 injured. They were also registered claims in Villa Clara and killings, with several injured and Deaths.
Although the authorities call to take precaution, the data confirms that traffic accidents continue to be one of the main causes of death in Cuba, in a context marked by the precariousness of transport and the lack of maintenance of road infrastructure.
