Cuba receives seven tons of powdered milk from US organizations

(EFE).- Cuba received this saturday seven tons of powdered milk donated by the United States NGOs Puentes de Amor, Code Pink and The People’s Forum, a “symbolic” load that will help alleviate some of the shortage of this basic product, according to members of these organizations.

The Cuban-American activist and promoter of Puentes de Amor, Carlos Lazo, told the press at Havana’s José Martí International Airport that the donation “makes a hole for the blocking (embargo) of the United States against Cuba”.

Professor Lazo called for the end of Washington’s economic sanctions against Havana in force for more than 60 years and described them as “a crime” in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic.

The aid was received by members of the Martin Luther King Center in Havana, an evangelical religious institution on the airport tarmac where other activists such as Medea Benjamin of Code Pink were also present.

The three organizations based in the United States usually express their opposition to the sanctions, which were radically increased during the Administration of former President Donald Trump

In 2014, under the presidency of Barack Obama, there was a rapprochement and embassies were reopened, but the president was unable to get Congress to lift the embargo laws, which are the basis of the sanctions.

The three organizations based in the United States usually express their opposition to the sanctions, which were radically increased during the administration of former President Donald Trump and have not been modified by his successor Joe Biden, despite his campaign promises.

Last November, they sent a shipment of 8,165 kg of canned tuna, pasta, distributed free of charge to the population of the eastern provinces, according to the Cuban government.

In July, other US non-governmental organizations sent millions of syringes – donations from that campaign reached $500,000 – to support vaccination against covid-19 in Cuba.

Last year, Cuba received a total of 135 donations from 40 countries, mostly medical supplies and equipment for immunization and the fight against the pandemic, according to official data.

This Saturday Russia sent 24 tons of medical supplies, multipurpose medical protective suits and injection syringes, the official newspaper reported. Granma.
