Cuba Prepares Citizenship Law

OnCubaNews

Cuba is preparing a Citizenship Law and is working to promote relations with emigrants, said Ernesto Soberón, general director of Consular Affairs and Attention to Cubans Living Abroad (Daccre), in Uruguay.

During a meeting with Cubans residing in Uruguay, the official said that in the next legislature of the Cuban Parliament, bills on Passport and Immigration must be approved.

He also highlighted that the new Constitution in force in Cuba since 2019 allows double and more citizenships, but that legislation is required.

Soberón held migratory talks with the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, which he considered positive for the purpose of promoting orderly, regulated and safe emigration.

On the other hand, he said that there are about 12,000 Cubans in Uruguay and recognized that the current migratory flow has demographic impacts in a nation with low birth rates.

According to Soberón, measures are being studied on issues that are of interest to emigration, including the streamlining of procedures and their participation in socioeconomic development, particularly at the territorial level. And he pointed out that the number of Cubans residing abroad interested in investing in their country is growing.

The Cuban official is traveling to Buenos Aires today to hold immigration talks with officials from the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
