A new power plant medicinal oxygen was installed in the provincial hospital Abel Santamaría Cuadrado, in the western Cuban province of Pinewood of the riverofficial media report.
The plant, inaugurated this Sunday by Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of the Island, has a generation capacity of 60 cubic meters per hour, which will be used to supply the largest hospital institution in Pinar del Río, refers the Cuban News Agency (ANC).
The facility has 12 positions for simultaneously filling cylinders and can also be connected to the hospital’s oxygen network, in order to cover the different services. In addition, “the system frees the ambient air of impurities and concentrates the gas, which is later used in patient care,” the report adds.
The cost of its construction and assembly amounted to more than 3.3 million pesos in national currency, while that of the “state-of-the-art technology” was half a million dollars, the information specifies, which does not detail the country of origin of said technology. nor the source by which it was financed.
However, Portal Miranda explained that it is a program for the support of medicinal oxygen on the Island, which provides for “the installation of some 48 plants in this type of care center, while there are already 20 on national soil,” the office points out. .

The minister valued that its assembly in the Pinar del Rio hospital constitutes “a strength” for that territory, since “it can respond to the oxygen demands of other institutions in case of emergencies, such as shortages or breakages of the central plant in Cuba.”
In that sense, he recalled the “complex situation” suffered by the island for several months last year, at the worst moment of the pandemic, when a break in the country’s main generating plant caused a significant deficit of medicinal oxygen and put a strain on to the Cuban health system.
Report the ACN that Portal Miranda also checked the progress of the remodeling of the neonatology service of the Abel Santamaría hospital, “the main service that from a construction point of view has affected the center”, and that in view of this situation “it was necessary to relocate it to another place that was not It has all the required conditions.
The new investment that is being undertaken “will connect the services of childbirth, caesarean section, neonatology and neonatal surgery,” a project in which, according to the agency, “neonatologists participated in pursuit of improving care for newborns.”
