Cuba: National Music Prize awarded to guitarist and composer Jesús Ortega

MIAMI, United States. – The 2022 National Music Prize was awarded this Friday to the guitarist and composer Jesús Ortega “for his extensive career at a national and international level,” according to reported the agency Prensa Latina.

“We took into account the extraordinary trajectory of the maestro, who throughout his prolific life has contributed in dissimilar spaces of creation for Cuban music to have a high degree of recognition; not only in the field of concert music but also with pieces for film production”, indicated the Ecuadorian musicologist Marielena Vinueza, one of the members of the jury that awarded the prize.

According to critics, Ortega is one of the pillars of the Cuban guitar school and stands out for works such as “Concertante”, “In Memoriam”, “Two poems of struggle for baritone” and “Dance of the naive adolescent”.

According to Prensa Latina, the musician holds various decorations and distinctions from different countries in Europe, Latin America and Cuba, including the Doctorate in Arts Honoris Causa from the University of the Arts, the National Prize for Artistic Education and the Maestro Prize. of Youth.

In addition, Ortega is the founder and president of the International Guitar Festival.

According to Indira Fajardo, president of the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM), the award will be delivered on December 30 in the Avellaneda hall of the National Theater of Cuba.

The jury that awarded the award It was also made up of Manolito Simonet, director of the El Trabuco group; the instrumentalist Germán Velazco; the 2021 José Maria Vitier National Music Award, and choral director Digna Guerra, 2006 National Music Award.
