The National Center for Seismological Research of Cuba (Cenais) reported this weekend that the seismic activity on the Island it occurred with “relative normality” during the first six months of 2022.
The report, quoted by the state agency Latin Presspoints out that this normality was maintained, despite “the very high telluric occurrence registered in the south of the archipelago, specifically in the southwest of Haiti and linked to the magnitude 7.3 earthquake reported on August 14, 2021.”
In the first semester, four noticeable earthquakes occurred with epicenters located in the eastern provinces of Granma and Guantánamo (Buey Arriba, Pilón, Caimanera), mainly located on the Oriente fault, where 3,720 tremors were recorded, of which 1,470 were in the area from Cuba, add the information.

The areas with a high incidence of seismicity were Cabo Cruz, Pilón-Chivirico, Santiago-Baconao, Imías, Cauto-Guacanayabo, Moa-Purial, Camagüey-Cubitas, Centro, Paso de los Vientos-Gran Inagua and Bahama Sur, while the areas of Pinar, North Bahama and Cayman, had normal reports.
The last of these earthquakes was recorded Last Tuesday in that area of the country and was magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale. In 2021, Cenais confirmed 20 perceptible earthquakes in Cuba, most of them in the eastern region of the island, the area of greatest seismic activity.
The Caribbean island is located in a region where different tectonic fault systems converge and has significant seismic activity.
