MIAMI, United States. — The Agricultores team, champion of the first Elite League in Cuba, fell this Tuesday against the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Republic with a score of three runs to one in their second game of the 2023 Caribbean Series, which takes place in Venezuela.
The three winners’ scores came in the top of the third inning. Two walks, a hit by shortstop Gustavo Núñez and two errors combined for the Dominican team to gain a decisive advantage, all against the pitches of Cuban starter Jonathan Carbó.
Agricultores scored his only run in the fifth inning, taking advantage of left fielder Mel Rojas Jr.’s error on a line drive by Guillermo Avilés, which ended with him reaching second base.
Then, Andrés de la Cruz, who had tied the match against Curaçao yesterday with a home run in the eighth inning, doubled the left field. The play should have been reviewed in the replay because, initially, the arbitrator had decreed foul the Cuban shortstop connection.
The winner of the clash, held at the Forum La Guaira stadium, was the Dominican opener Domingo Robles, who in five innings allowed the same number of hits and gave no walks.
For the Cubans, pitcher Kelvis Rodríguez stood out, who pitched four and two-thirds innings without receiving annotations.
Farmers had defeated the Curaçao Wildcats in his debut in the contest with the same score of three for one. This Saturday the Cubans will face the Leones de Caracas at 7:30 pm (local time) at the La Rinconada Stadium.
The qualifying phase for Farmers will continue on Sunday against the Cañeros de Los Mochis (Mexico); on Monday against the Vaqueros de Montería (Colombia); on Tuesday against the Indios de Mayagüez (Puerto Rico); and will close on Wednesday against the Federales of Chiriquí (Panama).
