Cuba, in favor of Iran and DD violations. H H. of women and children

CDMX, Mexico. – The Cuban Government voted this Thursday at the Human Rights Council against the establishment of an international and independent investigative mission to investigate the alleged violations of human rights (DD. HH.) in Iranrelated to the recent protests.

The popular outbreak in that nation began on September 16, 2022, after the death of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who passed away after being detained by the morality police in Tehran.

The resolution (A/HRC/S-35/L.1) on the deterioration of the situation of the DDs. H H. in Iran (especially with regard to women, girls and boys) it was approved by 25 votes in favour, six against and 16 abstentions.

In addition to Cuba, five regimes accused of DD violations supported the Islamic Republic. H H. and undemocratic practices: Armenia, China, Eritrea, Pakistan and Venezuela.

By adopting the resolution, the Council called on the Government of Iran to cooperate with the independent international mission that will assess its territory. Tehran must give him immediate and unimpeded access, as well as allow all allegations to be investigated.

This is not the first time that Cuba votes in favor of Iran and positions itself on the opposite side of the DDs. H H. In 2017, Havana abstained from voting against the death penalty applied to homosexual people in Iran, during a session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Iran is one of the few countries that still punish relationships between individuals of the same sex/gender with death of the “passive” member of the relationship, and with 100 lashes to the “active”.

During the meeting This Thursday, the Human Rights Council denounced the violent repression of the demonstrations, which caused the death of hundreds of people and the arrest of thousands.

For its part, Cuba’s position has been to justify the repression. The island’s official media have replicated the Iranian agenda and discourse on the demonstrations. For months they have maintained that the protesters are “terrorists” and “thugs and rioters in the service of foreign powers”, much like how they described those who took to the streets. on July 11, 2021.

Cuba and Iran: historical allies

In the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, then-ruler Fidel Castro, responsible for a long history of discrimination based on faith, said that “there was no contradiction between revolution and religion.” Even Cuba was one of the main promoters of Iran joining the Non-Aligned Movement. The Cuban dictator influenced this group to support Iran’s use of nuclear energy.

Cuba has also allowed the Persian nation to spy on a “common enemy” on its territory, 90 miles from Key West: the United States.

in 2003, the Iranian regime managed to interfere with the transmissions that were broadcast from Los Angeles, United States, in the Farsi language to inform the citizens of that country without censorship. Since it was impossible to do it from Iran itself due to the geographical distance, Tehran used its Caribbean ally.

It has been proven that the signals that blocked the transmissions originated in the outskirts of Havana.

In exchange for these and other favors, Cuba charged the ayatollah regime with millionaire credits.

Until 2015, the academic Jaime Suchlicki calculated that Cuba had received the equivalent of more than 1 billion euros in loans from Tehran since 2005. “Iran is financing some 60 projects ranging from the acquisition of 750 Iranian-made rail cars to the construction of power plants, dams and highways. This injection of Islamic capital has strengthened the stability of the Cuban regime,” the expert wrote seven years ago.
