MÉRIDA, Mexico -. The import of second-hand vehicles from the US exceeded 43 million dollars at the end of August, revealed the monthly report of the US-Cuba Trade and Economic Council (CubaTrade).

In August, car imports stood at $8,688,439 dollars, a figure that doubled the $3,705,643 dollars in July.

In this way, so far this year, car imports amount to $43,275,516. Some 16,075,524 of this total correspond to the importation of trucks.

For their part, food imports remained at similar parameters to July.

In August, 37,729,568 million dollars in food were imported, a figure that exceeds the 31,457,528 million dollars in July, but is lower than August of last year when $39,913,983 were imported.

Likewise, in the period from January 2024 to August, 279,815.52 million dollars in food were imported, an amount lower than the $232,487,373 in the same period of 2023.

In August, Cuba imported foods such as turkey ($176,682), or eggs, chickpeas, black beans, lentils, safflower oil from the United States.

Handbags, razors, forklifts, ink cartridges and parts of cotton gins were also imported.

The inclusion of human blood in the list is surprising.

In July, John S. Kavulich, president of CubaTrade, the non-governmental organization created in 1994, said that Most vehicle imports correspond to used cars.

Kavulich considered that the business of selling cars to Cuba could be around 50 million dollars in the coming months.

“Vehicle sales to Cuba are part of the great story this year,” said the expert, who considers it the great novelty in terms of exports from the US to the island.
